Tech Tuesday – Luna Labs’ Scientist to Discuss Material Technologies, Collaboration Opportunities

The speaker will be Dr. Joshua D. Smith, a materials research scientist from Charlottesville, Virginia-based Luna Labs, a small business that develops technology for the aerospace, energy, automotive, health sciences, first responders, telecommunications and defense industries.  Working with a global network of manufacturers, suppliers, licensees and distributors, Luna Labs develops everything from small-scale prototypes to market-ready products.

With years of government contract research and development, Luna Labs has vast experience in materials technology, product development and commercialization to meet the needs of both the federal government and private sector. During this presentation, Smith will provide an overview of material technologies with an emphasis on materials for thermal protection systems, anti-tamper coatings, corrosion mitigation and obscuration. Luna Labs’ success in technology development is complemented by strategic collaboration with government, industry and academia to meet the complex challenges required for applications such as hypersonic flight, secure electronics, signature control and target defeat. Along with current technologies at Luna Labs, portions of this talk will focus on opportunities to collaborate with Indiana-based academic institutions, government and industry through such processes as SBIR/STTR, TABA with IN3, government collaboration mechanism and joint development.

Smith is a principal investigator on numerous government contracts. He leads Luna Labs’ development of ceramic and inorganic nanomaterial technologies for applications in extreme environments and signature control. He earned his doctorate in materials chemistry from Indiana University and his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Ball State University.

This will be a hybrid event, allowing both in-person and virtual attendance. For those choosing to attend in person, the presentation will take place at the IN3 offices in Odon, Indiana, and will include a light lunch. Additionally, Smith will be available for networking and personal face-to-face meetings for an hour after the event for those in attendance.
